The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to individuals constructing commercial buildings in residential areas within the nation’s capital. He declared that such buildings will either have to be demolished or their licenses revoked.<\/p>\n
Concerns have been growing over the inappropriate use of residential areas for commercial purposes, particularly in the Gwarinpa area of the FCT. Addressing these issues, Wike emphasized the importance of adhering to the FCT master plan and noted that enforcing these regulations might require making unpopular decisions.<\/p>\n
“For Gwarinpa, the FCT gave out the land to the Federal Housing Authority. So the land is under the Federal Housing Authority. However, we have the oversight function of making sure that development is in line with the master plan of the FCT,” Wike stated. He added, “We set up a committee to look at those places where the master plan has been distorted. If you\u2019re supposed to build for residential purposes and you convert it to commercial purposes, then you have to bring it down or you lose the certificate.”<\/p>\n
Wike also pointed out that ethnic and religious considerations often hinder development in areas like Abuja, and stressed the need for decisive leadership. “So many people are afraid of making decisions. So many people are afraid of stepping on toes. But you cannot be a leader without stepping on toes,” he said. “What\u2019s important is your conscience. Are you doing the right thing?”<\/p>\n
