The restructuring of the Kano Emirate in 2019 was widely perceived as a politically motivated move aimed at reducing the influence of Emir Sanusi II, a vocal critic of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s administration. The creation of the new emirates fragmented the authority of the old Kano Emirate Council, diluting its power and influence.

Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, the Majority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly, who sponsored the Amendment Bill, stated after Thursday’s session, “The bill has been sent to the governor for assent. Now, there is no longer an active Emir in Kano across all five Emirates; Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye. The law now allows the governor to call on the traditional kingmakers to choose a new king.”

This recent development means that all the district heads elevated or appointed under the repealed law will revert to their previous positions. The move has sparked widespread discussions and speculations about the potential reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, who was deposed in March 2020.

Sanusi’s removal and the subsequent establishment of the new emirates were seen as a direct response to his outspoken criticism of the Ganduje administration. His reinstatement would mark a significant shift in Kano’s traditional leadership and could have far-reaching implications for the state’s political and cultural landscape.

Supporters of Sanusi have welcomed the Assembly’s resolution, viewing it as a step towards rectifying what they consider an unjust political maneuver. However, critics argue that the dissolution of the new emirates could lead to instability and disrupt the progress made in those regions.

The Kano State House of Assembly has reportedly resolved to dethrone the current Emir and dismantle the four new Emirates established under a controversial 2019 law, potentially paving the way for the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano.
