Ghana is set to boost the electricity supply in its country by building its first nuclear power plant.<\/p>\n
The West African nation will select a contractor from a host of foreign countries vying to build this nuclear power plant in the country.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n According to the\u00a0East African<\/span>.<\/p>\n Ghana\u2019s Energy Minister and Deputy Power Director, Robert Sogbadji, listed the foreign companies vying for the prospective nuclear power plant project.<\/p>\n The list of contractors include France\u2019s EDF, US-based NuScale Power and Regnum Technology Group, and China National Nuclear Corporation. Other companies are South Korea\u2019s Kepco and its subsidiary Korea Hydro Nuclear Power Corporation and Russia\u2019s Rosatom.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cCabinet will approve the final choice. It can be one vendor or two nations; it will depend on the financial model and the technical details,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Robert Sogbadji said.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n According to Sogbadji over 16 companies initially bided for the project at the preliminary stage but a technical team of state agencies and the energy ministry prequalified just five countries.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Ghana would be joining the host of other African countries like Burkina Faso and Uganda who have both signed agreements with Russia and China to construct their first nuclear power plants, Morocco and Namibia who are also working towards adding nuclear to their mix of energy sources.\u202f\u00a0South Africa is the only African country with a nuclear power plant and is currently looking to add 2,500 megawatts from its nuclear power plant.<\/span><\/p>\n Robert Sogbadji further noted that Ghana is aiming to add about 1000 megawatts of electricity from Nuclear to its energy mix by 2034.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Ghana is set to boost the electricity supply in its country by building its first nuclear power plant.
