This development follows President Tinubu’s directive to government bodies to procure CNG-powered vehicles, aligning with a global trend towards sustainable energy.

The new multibillion-naira factory, nearing completion, will cater exclusively to the production of CNG vehicles, marking a strategic shift for the renowned automobile manufacturer. Dr. Innocent Chukwuma, Chairman of Innoson Group, announced that the facility is at 90% completion and will soon be operational, with an annual production capacity of up to 30,000 vehicles.

The decision to focus on CNG vehicles comes amidst growing environmental concerns and the need for alternative fuel sources in Nigeria’s transportation sector. The move also responds to demands from various sectors, including agriculture, where a group of farmers urged Innoson to consider manufacturing tractors to enhance mechanized farming and stimulate economic growth.

In addition to the CNG vehicle plant, Innoson plans to collaborate with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), to establish a facility for manufacturing tractors and farm equipment. While the project faces administrative challenges, it reflects Innoson’s commitment to meeting diverse vehicular needs in Nigeria and across Africa.

This initiative underscores Innoson’s innovation in the automotive industry, following the successful launch of LNG/CNG Gas Trucks, buses, and cars in April 2023. These vehicles, equipped to utilize CNG, offer a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to diesel or petrol-powered vehicles.

As Innoson Motors advances into CNG-powered vehicle production, it heralds a new era of sustainable transportation in Nigeria, contributing to the nation’s efforts towards reducing carbon emissions and fostering economic development.

Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing Company Ltd (IVM), based in Nnewi, is poised to commence production of heavy-duty vehicles and buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
