Despite significant progress in implementing legal and digital identity systems, numerous challenges remain.<\/p>\n<p>Government officials from Ethiopia, South Africa, Nigeria, Rwanda, and other nations showcased their respective digital ID initiatives, offering lessons learned and highlighting ongoing efforts to overcome obstacles.<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopia&#8217;s National ID program executive director, Yodahe Zemichael, discussed the scaling up of the Fayda digital ID and its various applications, emphasizing its role in facilitating access to services.<\/p>\n<p>Kenya&#8217;s Principal Secretary for Immigration and Citizen Services, Prof Julius Bitok, reflected on the country&#8217;s journey towards implementing the Maisha digital ID system, acknowledging past failures and current challenges, including legal hurdles.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria&#8217;s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) director general, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, outlined the agency&#8217;s recent achievements in expanding the digital ID number (NIN) issuance and emphasized the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from South Africa, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Liberia shared successes and challenges with their digital ID systems, including reforms, biometric enrollment, and linkage to public services.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s Department of Home Affairs representative, Sihle Mthiyane, discussed reforms aimed at establishing a new identity management policy and enhancing digital identity&#8217;s role in the country&#8217;s digital transformation.<\/p>\n<p>Rwanda&#8217;s ID authority head, Josephine Mukesha, provided updates on the country&#8217;s progress towards launching a digital ID system and digitizing civil registration processes, emphasizing the system&#8217;s integration with government services and inclusivity.<\/p>\n<p>Sierra Leone showcased its digital ID&#8217;s role in accessing public services, while Liberia highlighted its digital ID experience despite encountering low public interest.<\/p>\n<p>The assembly concluded with discussions on gender-neutral ID policies and explored practical uses of digital ID in the Philippines, India, and Tunisia.
