This $4 million initiative aims to promote innovative recycling solutions and tackle the challenges of plastic waste management in Nigeria.

Nigeria has faced a severe plastic pollution crisis over the past several years, generating approximately 2.5 million metric tons of plastic waste annually.

The NPSA initiative is set to deploy over 24 aggregators and 9,500 collectors in its initial phase. This effort is expected to result in the collection of approximately 49,000 metric tons of plastic waste, with potential for further expansion in the coming years. Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative will create over 10,000 green jobs, contributing to a cleaner, healthier environment and stimulating the local economy.

Melissa Jones, Mission Director at USAID, emphasized the initiative’s impact on small and medium-scale enterprises, particularly benefiting entry-level and semi-skilled workers. “This new value chain will be a significant boon for small and medium enterprises, creating numerous opportunities for local workers,” she stated.

Saadia Madsbierg, President of The Coca-Cola Foundation, highlighted the program’s potential to increase collection and recycling rates. “The NPSA will serve as a catalyst for boosting recycling efforts in Nigeria, helping to drive significant improvements in plastic waste management,” Madsbierg remarked.

This collaboration between USAID, the Coca-Cola Foundation, and TechnoServe Nigeria represents a critical step towards addressing the plastic pollution crisis in Nigeria. By fostering innovative recycling solutions and creating sustainable employment opportunities, the NPSA aims to make a lasting impact on the country’s environmental and economic landscape.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has partnered with the Coca-Cola Foundation and TechnoServe Nigeria to launch the Nigeria Plastic Solutions Activity (NPSA).
