Spain’s left-wing government has initiated the enforcement of its new policy, refusing entry to Spanish harbors for cargo ships carrying weapons destined for Israel. The Danish freighter Marianne Danica was the first vessel to be denied a port call, requested for May 21, under this new policy. Transport Minister \u00d3scar Puente announced the decision on Thursday evening via social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n
“Spain will systematically reject such stopovers, for one obvious reason,” Puente stated.<\/p>\n
Foreign Minister Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares reiterated this stance in Brussels late on Thursday, emphasizing that the Middle East requires peace, not additional weapons.<\/p>\n
Spain has emerged as one of the staunchest critics in Europe of Israel’s military actions against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. In February, the Spanish government suspended arms exports to Israel, a decision made in October. Albares emphasized that the denial of entry to ships carrying weapons for Israel aligns with this suspension.<\/p>\n
The controversy surrounding this issue erupted earlier in the week when attention turned to the anticipated arrival of the German ship Borkum in the eastern Spanish port of Cartagena on Friday. Pro-Palestinian movements and critics of the Israeli government called on Madrid to deny entry to the ship or detain it, citing its transportation of weapons for Israel.<\/p>\n
Government ministers refuted these claims, asserting that the ship’s final destination was the Czech Republic.
