This appeal was made by AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina during the Nasarawa Investment Summit in Lafia, themed ‘The Industrial Renaissance.’

Citing the 2023 Philips Consulting State Performance Index (PSPI), Adesina highlighted that Nasarawa’s infrastructure—including public transport, water and sanitation, and other physical infrastructure—falls below the national average. “To change this narrative, Nasarawa should accelerate efforts to mobilize private sector investment for infrastructure development and service delivery. This will also ease fiscal pressures on the state,” he stated.

Adesina reaffirmed the AfDB’s dedication to assisting both federal and state governments in enhancing their infrastructure. As of April, 31% of the bank’s active portfolio, valued at $1.44 billion, is allocated to infrastructure projects encompassing energy and power, transport, water, and sanitation.

“In Nasarawa state, the bank financed the construction of the Keffi and Akwanga water supply scheme,” Adesina noted. This project includes intake works, pumping stations, a 62,850 m³/day treatment plant, 19.9 km of transmission and 42 km of distribution pipes, service reservoirs, drainage, and associated buildings. “We look forward to doing more in the state’s infrastructure space, supporting public-private partnerships (PPPs) and export-oriented private sector initiatives,” he added.

A vibrant and competitive private sector, Adesina asserted, can drive economic diversification and boost exports. However, he pointed out that implicit taxation of the private sector remains a significant challenge in Nigeria, as many firms are compelled to provide their own infrastructure.

Adesina also urged Nasarawa to collaborate with relevant organizations to address insecurity and mitigate the environmental and social impacts around the state’s mining sites. He emphasized the importance of deepening the financial sector and de-risking investments to foster economic growth. Improved access to credit for private sector investors and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is essential, he said.

Adesina’s remarks underscore a broader strategy aimed at harnessing private sector capabilities to spur infrastructure development and economic growth. By leveraging private investment, Nasarawa can alleviate fiscal burdens while advancing essential public services and infrastructure.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has called on the Nasarawa State government to engage the private sector in developing infrastructure and improving service delivery.
