As the leader of the SPD, a prominent party in Germany’s ruling coalition, Klingbeil advocated for the implementation of incentives to encourage voluntary service among young individuals. He cited examples such as providing study opportunities, vocational training, or facilitating access to a driving license, which are often perceived as costly hurdles for many young Germans.<\/p>\n
Compulsory military service in Germany was suspended in July 2011 after 55 years of implementation. However, the legal framework still allows for its revival in the event of civil unrest or national defense emergencies.<\/p>\n
Klingbeil emphasized the importance of promoting a sense of duty and service to the country among young people but stressed that coercion may not be the most effective approach. Instead, he proposed alternatives such as voluntary participation in social or ecological programs, or service within Germany’s military, the Bundeswehr.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the challenges associated with mandatory conscription, Klingbeil underscored the difficulty of compelling such a large number of young individuals to serve against their will.<\/p>\n
