The Department of Development Control under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has initiated the demolition of more than 500 illegal structures within the bustling Karmo market in Abuja.<\/p>\n

Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, the director of the department, clarified during the operation on Wednesday that the demolition was prompted by the expiry of the 24-hour notices previously issued to the traders.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Earlier in the week, the department had served 24-hour demolition notices to the operators of the illicit markets and shanties situated along the Karmo \u2013 Dei-Dei road corridor.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Represented by Mr. Garba Jibril, an Assistant Director and the Sector Monitor overseeing Karmo and other districts, Galadima affirmed that the demolition exercise adhered to due process.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
He emphasized that ample time had been granted for the evacuation of valuables by the operators and owners of the unauthorized structures and shanties.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Galadima underscored the necessity of the demolition, citing the significant traffic congestion experienced along the road corridor, particularly on market days.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
In response to the challenge, FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, directed the removal of all illegal structures, shanties, and informal markets along the road corridor to facilitate unhindered traffic flow and enhance the convenience of road users.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Affected traders were encouraged to relocate to the fully developed and equipped market in the vicinity. The market operators have agreed to offer affected traders a year of free shop occupancy before commencing subsidized rent payments, along with other incentives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
