These individuals are now included in the National Social Register, making them eligible to benefit from the Conditional Cash Transfer and other Social Intervention programs.

Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, announced this pivotal development during her official visit to the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja. She revealed that the Federal Government’s decision to expand the welfare scheme to include ex-service men, their widows, and dependants is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, a promise to the Nigerian people.

Dr. Edu emphasized that this expansion is a crucial step to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to maintain peace in the country. Including the families of those who paid the supreme price is not only a matter of recognition but also serves as a morale booster for those who are currently safeguarding the nation.

In her address, the Minister requested accurate data for the affected ex-servicemen and their dependants. This data will facilitate their inclusion in the ongoing national social register verification process. The initiative is designed to help the families of retired Ministry of Defence personnel, especially those who lost their lives while defending the nation.

Dr. Edu underlined the significance of this program for the families of fallen heroes. The wives of these servicemen can utilize the support to establish small businesses, ensuring their children can continue their education, access basic healthcare, and maintain their families’ well-being. The government’s commitment to supporting these families extends beyond the 75,000 households already identified.

Dr. Edu also introduced the Government Enterprise Empowerment Program (GEEP), aimed at assisting small-scale businesses and improving the welfare of Nigerian market women and farmers. This program offers a platform for ex-service men, widows, and their dependants to participate actively.

The Minister encouraged collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to ensure the success of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision to eradicate poverty in Nigeria. She highlighted her ministry’s commitment to ensuring that those who served the country with distinction and lost their lives in active service are not left behind in this initiative.

Dr. Edu also emphasized the need for adequate security for humanitarian workers who carry out their national assignments in states prone to insecurity, requesting the Ministry of Defence’s assistance in this regard.

The Honorable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, expressed his gratitude for the initiative and pledged to cooperate to ensure the proper coordination of the scheme. He commended the efforts to renew the hope of retired officers and their families and motivate current officers in securing the nation’s territorial integrity.

The Federal Government has taken a significant step to enhance the welfare of vulnerable ex-service men, widows, and dependants of fallen heroes.
