The handover ceremony took place during the 24th Combat Service Support Training Week at Abalti Barracks in Lagos, attended by high-ranking officials including the representative of the Minister of Defense and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry.

These Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) mark a notable upgrade from their predecessors, being enhanced versions of the Mengshi CSK-131 Dong Feng light armored vehicle, originally developed by the Chinese company Dongfeng. Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, addressing the event on May 8, 2024, underscored the advanced capabilities of these vehicles, particularly in effectively detecting and engaging adversaries.

EPAIL’s commitment extends beyond mere production, encompassing comprehensive support services such as operator training, maintenance, and repairs. Having previously collaborated with the Nigerian government and the Defense Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) for military equipment production, EPAIL has now embarked on mass production of these locally manufactured vehicles. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on foreign military supplies and bolster national security by enhancing the army’s operational readiness with domestically produced technology.

The design of these vehicles, originating from China, boasts significant improvements over its predecessor, featuring onboard computer systems with digital map software and Beidou satellite communication and positioning systems. Night visibility is enhanced with two night-vision cameras, one for the driver and one at the rear door.

In terms of specifications, the CSK-131 measures 5,100 mm in length, 2,400 mm in width, and 2,000 mm in height, with a total weight of 6,300 kg and a payload capacity of 1,400 kg. Various variants tailored to specific needs are available, including the Command Post version with advanced communication suites and the Armored Reconnaissance variant equipped with armaments such as a 12.7 mm machine gun and a 35 mm automatic grenade launcher.

The local production of these vehicles signifies Nigeria’s proactive approach to addressing security challenges, including conflicts with Boko Haram and tensions between farmers and herders. By manufacturing these vehicles domestically, Nigeria aims to streamline acquisition processes, enhance maintenance capabilities, and bolster its autonomy in national defense, thus reducing reliance on external sources amid geopolitical uncertainties.

Equipment Protective Applications International Limited (EPAIL), a Nigerian defense contractor, has successfully delivered 20 new light armored vehicles to the Nigerian Army.
