African Steel Limited has strongly denied recent media reports alleging the closure of its Ikorodu Steel Factory by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) due to standards violations. In a statement released by the company’s management, signed by Ravi Sharma, Director of African Steel, the claims were described as false and attributed to competitors employing unfair business tactics.<\/p>\n
The statement clarified that SON officials had indeed visited the premises of African Steel in Ikorodu as part of their regulatory oversight. During the visit, inventory of manufactured steel products was taken, and samples were collected for further regulatory processes with proper documentation. However, at no point did SON officials shut down the premises of African Steel Limited.<\/p>\n
Sharma emphasized that African Steel Limited, as a member of the African Industries Group, upholds the highest ethical standards in all its operations both in Nigeria and globally. He reassured customers of the company’s commitment to delivering quality products and advised them to disregard untrue publications.<\/p>\n
In support of African Steel’s position, Director of Product Certification at SON, Engr. Enebi Onucheyo, affirmed that neither African Steel nor any other steel manufacturer had their facilities shut down in the recent regulatory exercise. He clarified that spot inspections were conducted, inventories were taken, and samples were collected for laboratory tests. This routine exercise aims to prevent the circulation of substandard iron rods in Nigerian markets.<\/p>\n
Engr. Onucheyo reiterated SON’s commitment to clamping down on standards infractions in all sectors of the economy, particularly those related to products classified as life-endangering.
