{"id":30798,"date":"2024-05-09T16:15:17","date_gmt":"2024-05-09T16:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=30798"},"modified":"2024-05-09T16:15:17","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T16:15:17","slug":"badagry-residents-beg-eko-disco-after-18-month-blackout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/05\/09\/badagry-residents-beg-eko-disco-after-18-month-blackout\/","title":{"rendered":"Badagry Residents beg Eko DisCo after 18-month blackout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several Badagry communities\u00a0in Lagos on Thursday decried the prolonged power outage in the area by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), which lasted over 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>Some residents of the communities, in\u00a0separate interviews, said the outage had paralysed the economic and social activities of their communities.<\/p>\n<p>The Badagry communities affected by the outage include Jegba Quarters, Posikoh, Huntoh, Farakoh, Igbaho and Awahjigoh in Badagry LGA.<\/p>\n<p>Arowolo Lukuman, the area\u2019s electricity committee chairman, said the outage was due to a fault in their\u00a0transformer on October 22, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe reported the fault to EKEDC\u2019s office in Badagry and Agbara. They asked us to contribute money, which we did,\u00a0 after which some technical crew from the\u00a0 Agbara office came to fix the fault, but a few days later, the transformer exploded again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe met their officials at Agbara and Marina on the issue, they told us that the community is owing over N4.5 million to the company,\u00a0 out of which we should pay at least N2.5 million\u00a0 before they can repair\u00a0 it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Segun Idowu, manager of a cool spot in the\u00a0Marina area of Badagry,\u00a0 spends close to N40,000 daily to buy petrol to power his generators.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Idowu appealed to EKEDC\u2019s management to fix the transformer and restore supply to communities in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Iyabode Ashogbon, a landlady at Jegba Quarters, said most of her tenants had packed out of her building due to the outage.<\/p>\n<p>Segun Kosoko, the spokesman for EKEDC, Agbara District Office, said electricity consumers under the Palace 1 transformer allegedly owed N20.17 million as of May 2023 and not N4.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe management\u2019s directive is that part of the debts should be paid. For the transformer to be repaired,\u00a0they have to make appreciable payments against their debts in their electricity bills.
