The House of Representatives has tasked its Committee on Foreign Affairs with conducting a comprehensive investigation into the operations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its various missions.

This decision came following the adoption of a motion by lawmaker Ben Etanabene, PDP-Delta, during a plenary session in Abuja on Thursday.

Etanabene highlighted that while the government had initiated reforms to enhance service delivery within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its affiliated agencies, there were ongoing challenges facing Nigerians abroad, particularly concerning consular services.

He expressed concern over the plight of Nigerians unlawfully detained in foreign countries, often enduring harsh conditions that could endanger their lives without swift intervention.

The motion also addressed issues related to visa application processes, where Nigerians face hurdles and exorbitant fees, including instances of denial of visas after substantial payments.

Furthermore, Etanabene raised concerns about the financial management of the ministry and its missions, citing instances of budgetary allocations, intervention funds, and internally generated revenue.

He noted numerous complaints regarding employment practices, appointments, postings, redeployment, and disciplinary matters within the missions, which could impact morale and service delivery.

The motion was unanimously adopted by the House, mandating the Committee on Foreign Affairs to conduct a thorough investigation and submit its findings to the House within three weeks.
