In response to a measles outbreak in Adamawa State, the government has taken the proactive step of closing down both public and private schools across the region.<\/p>\n
The decision to close schools was announced in a statement issued by Aisha Umar, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, on Monday in Yola. The closure aims to curb the spread of the disease and facilitate vaccination efforts by the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (PHCDA) targeting vulnerable age groups.<\/p>\n
According to the statement, schools will remain closed until Monday, May 13, 2024, to allow health authorities to conduct vaccination campaigns effectively. The directive applies to all educational institutions, both public and private, in the state.<\/p>\n
The closure comes in the wake of a concerning rise in measles cases, with reports indicating that at least 42 children have succumbed to the disease. Felix Tangwami, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, highlighted that the affected areas are communities with low vaccination rates.<\/p>\n
The outbreak has been particularly severe in Mubi North Local Government Area (LGA), where 23 fatalities have been recorded, and Gombi LGA, which reported 19 deaths.
