The group, operating from Lagos, Nigeria, managed to steal login details from over 3,200 victims, including 1,000 Dutch individuals, in just six months, according to Dutch broadcaster NOS.

The scams orchestrated by the gang were alarmingly straightforward. Victims would receive messages from their friends or followers on Facebook or Instagram, inviting them to participate in a competition or challenge. Clicking on the provided link would redirect victims to a fake login page resembling that of the social media platform. Unsuspecting users would then input their login credentials, unwittingly handing them over to the scammers, who swiftly hijacked their accounts by changing the email address and password.

NOS, in collaboration with security researcher Matthijs Koot, delved into the operations of the scamming gang, uncovering their modus operandi and the extent of their activities. Despite their lack of sophistication, with only smartphones and a mobile internet connection at their disposal, the scammers managed to operate over 125 phishing websites, actively using 24 of them to target unsuspecting users on Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms.

While the exact motives behind the hijacked accounts remain unclear, the scammers appear to utilize them for spreading cryptocurrency scams and phishing messages to the victims’ contacts. Victims, faced with the arduous task of regaining access to their compromised accounts, expressed frustration at the lack of support from Facebook and Instagram. Meta, the parent company of the platforms, acknowledged the challenges faced by users but emphasized its ongoing efforts to bolster security measures.

Despite Meta’s assurances of investment in security systems and continuous improvement, questions linger regarding the platforms’ ability to effectively thwart such basic phishing scams. Victims lament the absence of robust support mechanisms and the perceived inadequacy of Facebook and Instagram’s response to the escalating threat posed by cybercriminals. As phishing scams persist, users are urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant to safeguard their online accounts from exploitation.

A Nigerian gang of internet scammers has exposed the vulnerability of Facebook and Instagram to phishing scams, despite the platforms’ efforts to enhance security measures.
