This difficulty is exacerbated by a number of causes, including weak governance, structural and physical shortcomings, and pervasive poverty. The absence of access to proper WASH services has serious health, environmental, socioeconomic, and economic effects, resulting in increasing air, environmental, and water contamination from open defecation.

Abuja, often regarded as Nigeria’s most modern city, falls short in providing public restrooms, commonly known as “Gidan Wanka.” As a result, even in the city’s affluent neighbourhoods, it’s usual to see faeces along roadside edges, in unfinished buildings, and under bridges. The Abuja City Journal performed a comprehensive investigation to gain firsthand insights into the precise factors promoting open defecation in Abuja.

According to our investigation, open defecation in Abuja disproportionately affects people of lower socioeconomic class. The practise extends to residents of cities and towns all over Nigeria and is not just limited to road commuters or temporary residents. Due to the dearth of public restrooms in the Federal Capital Territory, open defecation happens by roadside, in bushes, car parks, and dumps.

Residents, like Oguntimehin Sefunmi from Durumi in Area 3, lamented the misuse of public spaces, such as the Area 1/3 pedestrian bridge and Berger bus stop, which have become makeshift toilets. Some park officials have normalized these unsanitary practices, especially during the night.

A visit to Zuba town in Gwagwalada Area Council revealed widespread littering, turning once picturesque spaces into eyesores. Similarly, Gwagwalada town suffers from open defecation, despite weekly sanitation efforts. The presence of trailers and tankers parked by the roadside compounds the issue. Residents, such as Aliyu Gambo, attribute much of the blame to tanker drivers and agberos, who use public spaces as makeshift restrooms. Mr. Nnamdi, however, argues that government enforcement of regulations could prevent such practices. He suggests designated parking areas for trucks, which could also create jobs and generate revenue.

Despite Nigeria’s efforts to combat infectious diseases, open defecation remains largely unchecked due to insufficient attention and preventive measures. To achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 by 2030 and Nigeria’s target to end open defecation by 2025, it is imperative that governments and society collaborate to provide essential WASH services in both rural and urban areas. Public awareness campaigns should promote a shift in attitudes toward eradicating open defecation. Employers and business owners must also offer proper sanitary facilities for employees and customers.

Maintaining a clean environment is foundational to the survival of other sectors. Therefore, a collective commitment to cleanliness is essential for the well-being of all.

Bobola Richard Despite the Federal Government of Nigeria’s concerted efforts, including initiatives such as the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency and the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, to strengthen Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programmes and address policy sector gaps, Abuja remains plagued by a critical issue: a lack of access to modern and […]

[177,172
59
post-2979","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-abuja-reports","category-news","tag-featured
["GET
