The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has taken swift action by deploying additional peacekeepers and initiating urgent patrols in response to recent outbreaks of intercommunal violence in Western Equatoria and Eastern Equatoria states.<\/p>\n
The escalation occurred when armed Murle youth from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) launched an attack on Kapoeta East County of Eastern Equatoria State on April 26.<\/p>\n
UNMISS reported that the attack resulted in civilian casualties, the abduction of women and children, and the displacement of vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n
Preliminary reports indicate a significant loss of life, with numerous casualties reported. Additionally, many women and children were abducted, and hundreds of cattle were stolen during the attack.<\/p>\n
Simultaneously, another wave of communal violence erupted in Tambura town of Western Equatoria State, forcing over 13,000 individuals to flee their homes.<\/p>\n
These displaced individuals are currently being accommodated at a displacement camp located outside a temporary base operated by UNMISS.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, an additional 4,000 people sought refuge at another displacement camp in Tambura town due to the renewed violence.<\/p>\n
