The project, slated for completion by June 2024, aims to bolster surveillance and safety measures on one of the nation’s busiest bridges.

The announcement was made by David Umahi, the Minister of Works, during an inspection visit to assess the progress of the under-deck project contracted to Julius Berger at the Third Mainland Bridge, Iddo Bridge, and Carter Bridge.

“We have seen the pace of work made and are happy with it, also we have promised to increase the pace of work against the incoming lagoon tide in June,” remarked Umahi.

Detailing the ongoing works on the bridge, Umahi highlighted the completion of the deck job and the construction of CCTV cameras and observation rooms. Additionally, efforts are underway to address erosion concerns below the deck, exacerbated by illegal sand mining activities.

Umahi underscored the significance of the CCTV installation in combating illegal sand mining, which has contributed to erosion and structural degradation on the bridge. He emphasized the need for expert consultation and collaboration with international companies to design effective remedies for the bridge’s deteriorating condition.

Acknowledging the absence of solar lights on Carter Bridge, Umahi assured stakeholders of plans to replicate the renovation efforts seen on the Third Mainland Bridge across other bridges in Lagos and nationwide, subject to budgetary allocations.

“We have considered 18 bridges for renovation, including the Murtala Mohammed Bridge in Kogi State and several others across the country. Our progress on these projects aligns with the directive from the President,” concluded Umahi.

As the government prioritizes infrastructure upgrades to ensure the safety and functionality of critical transportation routes, the installation of CCTV cameras and solar lights on the Third Mainland Bridge signals a proactive step towards enhancing security and preserving vital infrastructure assets.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled plans to enhance security on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos by installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and solar lights.
