Starting next month, the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation will commence the disbursement of \u20a625,000 grants to eligible members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners who have been included in the expanded National Social Register of the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) Scheme.<\/p>\n
Dr. Betta Edu, Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, made the statement during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), led by President Joe Ajaero, at the Labour House in Abuja. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made a commitment to labor leaders to include vulnerable pensioners in the CCT scheme, which he is determined to fulfill.<\/p>\n
Dr. Edu said that the President had urged the prompt inclusion of vulnerable retirees on the National Social Register in order for them to benefit from the Conditional Cash Transfer program as part of the expansion of the National Social Safety Net. President Tinubu reinforced this statement on Independence Day, when he pledged 25,000 for 15 million homes over a three-month period.<\/p>\n
The Minister urged the NLC to expedite the process of collecting data for potential beneficiaries among vulnerable pensioners to ensure that they can start receiving CCT payments as early as November. She stressed the importance of fast-tracking the process and expressed her commitment to making it happen.<\/p>\n
In response, Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, commended the Ministry for its poverty alleviation initiatives and Dr. Edu’s dedication to her role. He emphasized the need to address the root causes of poverty and called for a focus on social welfare interventions and job creation to support families. Ajaero urged the federal government to create a productive economy with functioning factories that can provide employment opportunities.<\/p>\n
The President of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Godwin Abumisi, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and Minister Edu for recognizing retirees’ need for federal government benefits. He noted that many pensioners receive as little as \u20a65,000 to \u20a610,000 per month, making the \u20a625,000 grant a significant contribution to their well-being.
