Throughout the weekend, many filling stations remained closed, leaving Nigerians struggling to access Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

A significant development exacerbating the scarcity is the diversion of fuel trucks from Lagos depots to Abuja. According to reports from officials and marketers, there’s a directive prioritizing fuel supply to Abuja before other parts of the country. This directive has raised concerns about prolonged queues in the South-West.

Sources within the oil sector revealed that hundreds of trucks loaded on Saturday were dispatched to Abuja as per the NNPCL directive. Additionally, there’s rationing of fuel by the NNPCL, allocating only half of the usual supply to depots, causing further strain on distribution.

An operator attributed the erratic supply to the NNPCL’s inability to import sufficient fuel presently. The situation has led to queues and increased pressure on Abuja’s fuel supply, with implications for other regions like the South-West.

National Vice President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Hammed Fashola, expressed hope that the situation would improve in Lagos and Ogun between Monday and Wednesday, relying on NNPC assurances.

However, concerns remain about Abuja, given the distance from Lagos and the persistent supply prioritization. NNPC spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, refuted claims of deliberate fuel rationing, asserting that product availability remains stable.

Meanwhile, the scarcity’s impact extends beyond fuel availability, affecting transportation and daily activities nationwide. Long queues, increased transport fares, and reliance on black market sales characterize the situation, prompting frustrations among citizens.

In affected states like Ogun, Ondo, Kwara, Osun, and Ekiti, scarcity persists, with long queues observed at filling stations. The situation has led to increased prices, exacerbated by opportunistic black market activities.

In response, oil dealers have resumed loading PMS at Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Warri jetties, following NNPC’s logistical improvements. However, challenges in transportation logistics persist, delaying the normalization of fuel supply across the country.

Despite assurances from NNPC and efforts to address logistical hurdles, the fuel scarcity underscores systemic challenges in Nigeria’s petroleum distribution system, with ramifications for citizens’ daily lives and economic activities.

Despite assurances from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) that logistical issues causing fuel scarcity had been resolved, the situation persists across Nigeria, particularly in Lagos and other regions.
