The management of Federal Polytechnic Ilaro in Ogun State has addressed the circumstances surrounding the death of one of its students, Abimbola Ajayi, attributing it to pregnancy-related complications rather than clinic malpractice.<\/p>\n

Ajayi, an HND 1 student in the Department of Leisure and Tourism, passed away following complications from what the institution described as a failed abortion.<\/p>\n

This statement came in response to allegations from several students that Ajayi’s demise was due to clinic incompetence, citing delays in treatment as staff insisted on verifying her student ID and medical cards before attending to her.<\/p>\n

Bameke Solomon, the Sports Director of the National Association of Nigeria Students, Southwest, recounted the incident, highlighting a delay of nearly 20 minutes before medical attention was provided.<\/p>\n

Damilare Thanni, President of the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro Student Union, echoed these concerns, questioning the necessity of demanding student IDs and medical cards during emergencies.<\/p>\n

However, a statement signed by Deputy Registrar, Public Relations, Mr. Sola Abiala, clarified the events leading to Ajayi’s death. The statement revealed that Ajayi was transported to the clinic after experiencing abdominal discomfort during a practical lesson, accompanied by her boyfriend who confirmed her pregnancy.<\/p>\n

Recognizing the severity of the case, the clinic swiftly referred Ajayi to a private hospital in town, utilizing one of the institution’s ambulances for transportation. Her parents were informed and reportedly arrived promptly in Ilaro.<\/p>\n

Dr. J. O. Omowunmi, the institution’s Dean of Student Affairs, confirmed that Ajayi’s remains were transported home in the polytechnic ambulance.<\/p>\n

While expressing regret over the tragic incident, the institution emphasized that Ajayi’s death resulted from pregnancy-related issues, not clinic malpractice.
