This recommendation was made during a policy advisory thematic lecture themed &#8220;Emerging Information Technology Trends and Effects on National Security&#8221; organized by WISER in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The research report presented at the lecture highlighted the need for the implementation of cybersecurity curricula across various sectors to cultivate the necessary workforce. Additionally, WISER urged the government to invest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and policy governance structures over a period of 10 to 15 years to bolster the nation&#8217;s cybersecurity capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Azeeza Balogun, Lead Research Assistant at WISER, emphasized the importance of raising a cadre of cyber-diplomats to reflect African perspectives and advocated for robust awareness initiatives to capitalize on the potential of Artificial Intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Balogun stressed the necessity for Nigeria to assert control over digital platforms within its borders and invest in AI technology for long-term advantages. Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of educational investment to enhance citizens&#8217; understanding and use of information technology without compromising security.<\/p>\n<p>The study recommended the development of operational and strategic cybersecurity curricula across various sectors, including armed forces, intelligence services, public sector institutions, academic institutions, and ICT service providers. Balogun urged the federal government to exercise caution in securing the information space and emphasized the importance of wide consultations to avoid techno-authoritarianism.<\/p>\n<p>Brig.-Gen. Saleh Bala (Rtd), President of WISER, highlighted the paradigm shift towards a human-centric purpose of government and underscored the need for state response to the challenges posed by information technology. He emphasized the role of civil society in oversighting government efforts and safeguarding the civic space from misuse of information technology capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Executive Vice Chairman of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Khalil Halilu, commended WISER for its proactive approach to addressing cyber threats. He emphasized the importance of tackling challenges such as terrorism, electronic fraud, and defamation to safeguard national stability, privacy, and development.<\/p>\n<p>Halilu expressed confidence that the recommendations arising from WISER&#8217;s research program would contribute to the formulation of appropriate policies governing thematic security and related areas.
