He attributed the trend of younger students taking entrance exams to parental influence and urged parents to reconsider their approach.

Expressing concern over the implications of admitting underage candidates, Mamman highlighted the transitional phase that young individuals undergo when entering tertiary education. He emphasized the need for students to possess the maturity and self-regulation required for university life, suggesting that early admission could hinder their ability to manage effectively.

The Minister underscored the Ministry’s commitment to introducing practical skills to students from an early age, starting as early as primary school. He emphasized the importance of skill acquisition as a viable alternative for students who may not pursue tertiary education, ensuring that they have meaningful opportunities after completing their primary and secondary education.

In light of the limited capacity of tertiary institutions to accommodate all candidates, Mamman stressed the significance of expanding skill acquisition programs. He advocated for a holistic approach to education, where 20% of students gain admission to tertiary institutions while the remaining 80% receive training in practical skills to prepare them for diverse career paths.

By Gabriella Ogbu The Nigerian government has announced a new policy mandating that candidates must be at least 18 years old to gain admission into tertiary institutions.
