Popular cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, has taken steps to appeal the six-month maximum sentence handed down to him by a Federal High Court in Lagos State.<\/p>\n
Charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on four counts related to naira abuse, Okuneye initially pleaded guilty before Justice A.O. Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos.<\/p>\n
Justice Awogboro, in a ruling delivered on April 12, sentenced Okuneye to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine, emphasizing the need for the judgment to serve as a deterrent against currency abuse.<\/p>\n
However, Okuneye’s counsel, Mr. Bimbo Kusanu, has filed a notice of appeal, urging the Court of Appeal to overturn the maximum sentence and replace it with a N50,000 fine for each count.<\/p>\n
Kusanu argues that the trial court’s decision failed to consider Okuneye’s lack of prior criminal convictions and the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), which allow for lesser sentences.<\/p>\n
He contends that the sentence imposed was punitive and not in line with the ACJA’s mandatory provisions.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Kusanu highlights Okuneye’s cooperation with the court proceedings, including his guilty plea and timely response to the EFCC’s invitation, as factors warranting a more lenient sentence.<\/p>\n
