In an interview in Calabar on Monday, Cross River’s transport commissioner, Ekpenyong Cobham, disclosed that a mere five per cent of the commercial drivers in the state are trained and certified.<\/p>\n

Mr. Cobham’s statement came in response to protests by some minibus drivers against the state government’s directive to paint their vehicles a uniform color and obtain security coding.<\/p>\n

Expressing concern, Cobham highlighted the lack of professionalism among many commercial transport operators in the state. He noted that a significant portion of drivers transitioned from motorcycle riding to tricycle operation before becoming bus drivers, often lacking proper licenses and driving training.<\/p>\n

He criticized past administrations for prioritizing revenue generation over safety and regulatory enforcement, leading to a neglect of essential training and certification for drivers.<\/p>\n
