Rear Admiral Saheed Akinwande, the Flag Officer Commanding of ENC, disclosed that the command also seized and destroyed approximately 293,900 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) during this period.

Speaking to journalists at his office in Calabar, Rear Admiral Akinwande highlighted the accomplishments of Operation Delta Sanity, which was launched by the Chief of Naval Staff in January of the same year. He noted that the operation has been instrumental in tackling illicit activities in the region.

Among the achievements attributed to Operation Delta Sanity are an increase in sea patrol time to about 1,752 hours and a cumulative patrol time of approximately 45,540 and 30 hours across the bases by boats and air assets, respectively. The operation has also facilitated robust riverine patrol and clearance operations, resulting in the apprehension of numerous suspects, destruction of several wooden boats, and recovery of illegal bunkering equipment.

Additionally, the Nigerian Navy has recovered 412,000 litres of stolen crude oil during the operation, underscoring its commitment to combating illegal activities in the Niger Delta.

The deactivation of these illegal refineries marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to curb illegal oil refining and associated criminal activities in the region. The Nigerian Navy remains steadfast in its mission to uphold maritime security and protect the nation’s natural resources.

The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) of the Nigerian Navy has announced the deactivation of 60 illegal refinery sites in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region between January and April 2024.
