President Bola Tinubu and Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar have issued a heartfelt appeal to the labour unions to consider other options in an effort to prevent a nationwide strike planned by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in opposition to the removal of fuel subsidies by the federal government.<\/p>\n

During a public lecture in Abuja commemorating Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary, President Tinubu, represented by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, implored the unions to grant the government more time to address their concerns. Jibrin emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to addressing the nation’s socio-economic challenges and echoed the administration’s determination to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.<\/p>\n

“The Sultan has spoken about the impending NLC strike,” Jibrin stated. “I, on behalf of His Excellency, the President, and the entire government, appeal to labor leaders to reconsider the strike. Let’s engage in dialogue, come together, understand each other’s perspectives, and collectively find solutions to the challenges facing our country.”<\/p>\n

Highlighting the government’s efforts, Jibrin continued, “This government is new and is working tirelessly to provide relief to all our citizens. It has allocated N500 billion and is unveiling additional packages to alleviate the effects of the subsidy removal. Therefore, we need to support and pray for the government.”<\/p>\n

Sultan Muhammad Sa\u2019ad Abubakar echoed this sentiment, urging organized labor to postpone the strike and allow the federal government another opportunity to address their concerns. He made a heartfelt appeal, saying, “For God’s sake, for Allah’s sake, anyone considering a strike should please give the government another chance.
