The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association is urging pet owners to prioritize responsible pet ownership by keeping their cherished animals within their premises and ensuring they are continuously vaccinated against rabies in honor of World Rabies Day.<\/p>\n
Dr. Oluwatoyin Adetuberu, the association’s President, gave this critical message during a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. World Rabies Day, observed annually on September 28, serves as a global platform for raising awareness about rabies prevention and highlighting efforts in combating this lethal disease.<\/p>\n
This year’s theme, ‘All for 1- One Health for All’ 2023, emphasizes the interconnectedness of human and animal health and underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing health challenges.<\/p>\n
Dr. Adetuberu emphasized the critical role that responsible pet ownership plays in curbing the proliferation of stray dogs and the associated risk of rabies in Nigeria. She stated, “To combat the issue of stray dogs in Nigeria and mitigate the spread of rabies, we strongly advocate for responsible pet ownership. If you are a dog owner, please ensure that your pet is vaccinated against rabies and kept within the confines of your premises. It is our collective responsibility to prevent our pets from straying and endangering the lives of fellow citizens.”<\/p>\n
Rabies is a preventable viral disease that continues to pose a significant threat to public health worldwide. It is primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected animal, often dogs. Vaccination of pets remains one of the most effective ways to prevent rabies transmission to humans.<\/p>\n
The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association’s message on World Rabies Day serves as a reminder that individuals, communities, and governments all play a vital role in eradicating rabies.
