Speaking at the 4th Ministerial Briefing Session in Abuja, Minister Idris clarified that the recently announced electricity tariff hike affects only 15% of the consumer population. He stressed that while there are understandable misconceptions and concerns surrounding the tariff review, it is a strategic move towards a more sustainable and efficient electricity sector.<\/p>\n
The briefing session, attended by Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu and Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Oseni Musiliu, focused on the recently approved tariff review by NERC.<\/p>\n
Minister Idris highlighted the transformative aspects of the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The bill mandates GENCOs to allocate 5% of their annual operating expenditure for the development of host communities. Additionally, the act empowers state governments to generate and distribute electricity, following its removal from the exclusive list.<\/p>\n
