The report, a collaboration between MSI Reproductive Choices and the Center for Countering Digital Hate, alleges that both companies have hindered local abortion providers’ ability to advertise while allowing misinformation to proliferate.

In countries like Mexico, where abortion was decriminalized in 2023 but remains restricted in some states, Meta reportedly blocks ads related to abortion due to existing bans. However, the report claims that other reproductive health content, such as cervical cancer screenings and information on contraceptive methods, has also been censored. Similar issues were reported in Nepal, Vietnam, Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria, where ads promoting pregnancy options or other reproductive health services were allegedly blocked.

Whitney Chinogwenya, a marketing specialist at MSI Reproductive Choices, criticized the tech giants for prioritizing profits over public good, stating that accurate online information is crucial for individuals seeking timely reproductive healthcare.

The report also highlights instances of delayed or inadequate responses from Meta and Google regarding concerns raised by reproductive health organizations. Furthermore, it accuses the companies of profiting from false or misleading anti-abortion ads in countries like Ghana and Mexico, exacerbating misinformation surrounding reproductive rights.

Imran Ahmed, CEO and founder of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, condemned the companies’ actions, likening their behavior to colonialism and accusing them of disregarding local human rights and civil liberties.

In response, Google stated that it cannot comment on specific ad blocks without reviewing the ads in question but emphasized that ads targeting terms like “pregnancy options” are not prohibited in Ghana or other listed countries. Meta, on the other hand, stated that it allows posts and ads promoting healthcare services but will review the report’s findings regarding content moderation policies.

As the debate continues, stakeholders emphasize the importance of ensuring access to accurate reproductive health information and combating misinformation, particularly in regions where such resources are vital for public health and rights.

Meta and Google has been reportedly accused of restricting access to reproductive health information in regions such as Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
