During a press conference to mark the 2024 Tuberculosis Day in Kaduna, State Commissioner for Health Umma Kaltume-Ahmed shared that tuberculosis case detection surged from 21,557 cases in 2022 to 32,297 cases in 2023, indicating a notable enhancement in case identification compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n
Kaltume-Ahmed attributed this achievement to enhanced support from the state government and development partners for the Tuberculosis programme.<\/p>\n
The theme of the 2024 World TB Day, “Yes, We Can End TB,” with the slogan, “No Gree For TB, Check Am O,” underscores the commitment made by global leaders at the 2020 United Nations high-level meeting on TB in New York. The target is to eradicate the TB epidemic by 2030 by bolstering access to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, sustainable financing, research, and ending stigma and discrimination against TB-affected individuals.<\/p>\n
Despite progress, tuberculosis remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases globally, with over 4,100 deaths and close to 28,000 new cases daily. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation, necessitating increased investment to sustain the fight against TB and uphold global commitments.<\/p>\n
Continuous sensitization and investment are deemed crucial to saving millions of lives and hastening the end of the TB epidemic. The state has expanded the number of facilities providing TB services to 78% coverage, with the aim of ensuring every facility in the state offers such services.<\/p>\n
Kaltume-Ahmed called on residents, public, and private organizations in Kaduna State to collaborate with the government in efforts to combat TB and save lives. She urged individuals experiencing a persistent cough for two or more weeks to undergo testing, assuring them that TB is curable, and diagnosis and treatment are readily available in the state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
