This new timeline differs from the 5 weeks initially projected by the firm.

Chris Wood, the CEO of West Indian Ocean Cable Company, also shed light on the repair process, stating that it depends on the extent of the damage and prevailing weather conditions. He suggested that the total repairs are expected to be completed by mid to end-April.

Despite the extended timeline, MainOne has assured that services have been restored, and regional interconnection was enabled last week to ensure stability in the digital ecosystem across the region. The company expressed optimism that the cable will be repaired as planned, and services will be fully restored.

The disruption, which occurred on March 14, 2024, was caused by multiple cable cuts off the coast of Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, affecting internet connectivity in several countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Senegal. Seismic activity on the seabed was identified as the cause of the cuts, impacting four cables including WACS, ACE, SAT3, and MainOne.

Efforts to mitigate the impact of the cuts involved rerouting traffic to other functional subsea cables. Wood confirmed that landslides may have caused the cuts, and three ships have been mobilized for repairs, with estimated costs reaching millions of dollars.

While internet services have largely been restored in Nigeria, countries like Ghana are still experiencing downtimes due to limited cable landings. Wood highlighted ongoing efforts to land Google’s Equiano cable in Ghana to enhance network resilience.

The Nigerian Communications Commission reported that six countries, including four West African countries, were still facing outages caused by the submarine cable cuts. As the repair process continues, stakeholders remain hopeful for a swift restoration of internet connectivity across the region.

In a recent development, it has been revealed that the repairs to the damaged subsea cables responsible for the internet disruptions in Nigeria and other West African countries will now take longer than initially anticipated, with an estimated timeline of 6 to 8 weeks.
