The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has issued a dire warning, expressing concerns that without immediate government intervention, more than 50,000 Nigerian pilgrims could miss out on this year’s Hajj pilgrimage. This looming crisis stems from the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) imposing an additional N1.9 million fee on intending pilgrims.<\/p>\n
Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, the national coordinator of MMWG, stressed the urgency of the situation, asserting that the only viable solution lies in the federal government’s approval of concessional rates for the conversion of dollars to naira, specifically tailored for this year’s Hajj pilgrimage. NAHCON recently justified the additional payment citing a significant increase in the dollar-to-naira exchange rate over the past five months.<\/p>\n
In a statement to LEADERSHIP following an emergency meeting held in Abuja, Abdullahi emphasized, “Without concessional rates for dollars to naira, it will be exceedingly challenging for over 50,000 Nigerian pilgrims, who have already made payments, to partake in this essential religious obligation.”<\/p>\n
Abdullahi pointed out that providing concessional exchange rates for Hajj has been a longstanding practice under previous Nigerian administrations. He urged President Bola Tinubu to swiftly intervene to prevent the situation from escalating further.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the broader significance of Hajj beyond its religious aspects, Abdullahi underscored its positive influence on individuals and governance. He suggested that Nigeria stands in need of spiritual intervention to address its prevailing socio-economic challenges and security threats.<\/p>\n
Abdullahi further remarked, “Granting this concession could pave the path for President Tinubu’s success, as beneficiaries would earnestly pray for the President and his administration in the sacred lands of Makkah and Madinah.”<\/p>\n
