The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced its intention to establish a compressed natural gas (CNG) park within the premises of the Ajaokuta Steel Company located in Kogi state. Shuaibu Audu, the Minister of Steel Development, revealed this plan in a statement released by Lizzy Okoji, his special assistant on media, in Abuja.<\/p>\n
The initiative stems from President Bola Tinubu’s approval of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) on August 18, 2023. This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to alleviate the impact of petrol subsidy removal on Nigerians.<\/p>\n
Audu emphasized that the establishment of the CNG park aligns with President Tinubu’s ‘renewed hope agenda’ aimed at addressing the challenges faced by Nigerians. He highlighted the global trend towards green, sustainable, and cost-effective energy sources, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to join this transition.<\/p>\n
The proposed CNG park, to be situated within the Ajaokuta Steel Company Ltd (ASCL) premises, is expected to leverage existing infrastructure such as the natural gas line from Warri to Ajaokuta, the Metallurgical Training Centre, engineering workshops, and the 10,000 housing estates in Ajaokuta environs.<\/p>\n
Audu commended the Nigerian army for launching CNG vehicles as part of its operations under the ‘Auto Switch Kick-off’ pilot program, which is driven by the PCNGI. He urged other organizations to adopt CNG technology due to its cost-effectiveness and its contribution to promoting a sustainable and healthy environment.<\/p>\n
