He noted that if operators were connected to additional cables such as Glo-1 and Equiano, the effects of recent cable damage to WACS, ACE, Main One, and SAT3 would have been less severe.

Furthermore, Wood highlighted the necessity for more cables to be landed in Nigeria to provide redundancy, despite acknowledging the cost-intensive nature of such projects. He estimated that landing a cable from Europe to Africa would cost approximately $1 billion.

Addressing concerns about physical security measures, Wood explained that most cable damages are caused by natural events rather than deliberate human interference. He emphasized the importance of cable diversity and redundancy, stating that connecting operators to every available cable provides resilience against disruptions.

Meanwhile, WIOCC has been leading efforts to restore internet services and connectivity in Nigeria. Wood revealed that over 100 links have been restored, and more individuals have been brought into the OADC data center in Lagos, which has direct connectivity to the Equiano system.

Additionally, WIOCC has invested over $100 million in new systems and plans to land the 2Africa cable in Nigeria later this year, further strengthening the country’s position and providing extra redundancy.

For the repair of damaged cables, Wood disclosed that three repair ships have been mobilized, with one coming from South Africa, another from Cape Verde, and the third from the UK. He estimated that the repair process could take three to four weeks, depending on weather conditions.

Wood’s proposals and WIOCC’s efforts aim to ensure the resilience and reliability of Nigeria’s internet infrastructure, safeguarding against future disruptions and supporting the country’s digital connectivity needs.

Mr. Chris Wood, the Chief Executive Officer of the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC), has outlined strategies to prevent such occurrences in the future.
