He called upon oil companies, illegal sand dredgers, and other entities operating in the Niger Delta to implement measures aimed at curbing water pollution, highlighting the significance of preserving the pristine beauty and tourism potential of River Ethiope, a vital waterway in the state.<\/p>\n
The keynote speaker, Prof. Rukeh Akpofure, Vice-chancellor of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources in Effurun, Delta State, underscored the importance of recognizing the rights of nature. He emphasized that ecosystems, including rivers like Ethiope, deserve legal protection akin to human rights to prevent their exploitation and degradation.<\/p>\n
Dafe Irikefe, the facilitator of the program and founder of River Ethiope Trust Foundation, emphasized the need to treat the river with personhood, given its invaluable contributions to humanity.
