The Federal Government has announced plans to receive 500 tractors assembled by the John Deere Group, a move aimed at enhancing mechanised farming and boosting food production in the country. Senator Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja.<\/p>\n

According to Senator Kyari, the delivery of the 500 tractors by John Deere is expected to be completed by the end of May, with additional tractors scheduled for delivery in September. He further assured that the John Deere Group is committed to meeting the target of supplying 2,000 tractors annually for the next five years, as outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Ministry.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the significance of mechanisation in increasing agricultural yields, Senator Kyari stressed the importance of tractors for driving growth in the agricultural sector. He reiterated the government’s dedication to improving food and nutrition security through mechanisation, emphasizing that the tractors would be made accessible, available, and affordable to farmers across the country, including small-scale, large-scale, and cooperative farmers.<\/p>\n

In addition to the procurement of tractors, the Federal Government has also secured 58,500 tons of milled rice from the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria to stabilize the market. Senator Kyari emphasized the government’s efforts to avoid exacerbating food price inflation by discouraging bulk purchases from the market, urging agencies like the World Food Programme (WFP) to consider alternative sourcing methods.<\/p>\n

The initiative, aimed at catalyzing farming activities and fortifying the nation’s food and nutrition security, aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s emergency declaration on food security. Senator Kyari also highlighted the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) contribution to agricultural production through the release of 2.15 million bags of assorted fertilizers worth over N100 billion to Nigerian farmers. This move, he explained, would enhance food production capabilities and encourage price stabilization in the agricultural sector.<\/p>\n

Assuring judicious utilization of the donated tractors and fertilizers, Senator Kyari affirmed that the Ministry would swiftly commence distribution as soon as the warehouse locations are made available across the country.
