Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, delivered this stern warning during a meeting with water tanker driver leaders in Enugu, held at the Government House on Wednesday.

Onyia emphasized the significant efforts made by Governor Peter Mbah to ensure water availability for the people of Enugu. However, he expressed concern over suspected elements, allegedly among water tanker drivers, who were undermining these efforts by damaging water assets. He highlighted the economic sabotage resulting from such illegal activities, considering the substantial government investment in the water project.

While affirming the government’s desire to expand opportunities for tanker drivers rather than curtail their businesses, Onyia condemned the reported sabotage of water infrastructure. He detailed instances where individuals purportedly associated with the drivers had tampered with pipelines, poured concrete into them, and dismantled water collection points.

Onyia relayed the government’s directive, stating that any implicated driver would face confiscation of their tanker and prosecution to the fullest extent of the law. The purpose of the meeting, he stressed, was to convey these resolutions clearly to the drivers’ community, urging cooperation in preserving water infrastructure for the common good.

He also expressed concern over reports of some tanker drivers selling water from questionable sources as drinking water. Onyia assured that Governor Mbah would not tolerate such practices, underscoring the importance of working together to ensure the viability and integrity of the water supply business.

The Enugu State Government has taken a firm stance against any water tanker driver involved in illegal activities or destruction of water facilities within the state.
