The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected an ex parte motion seeking an interim order to halt the impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of Edo State by the state House of Assembly. The move comes as the Edo State House of Assembly passed a resolution directing the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to form a seven-man committee to investigate allegations of gross misconduct leveled against the deputy governor, Shaibu.<\/p>\n
Efforts to physically serve Shaibu with the impeachment notice proved futile, as he was reportedly out of the state. Consequently, the House resolved to serve the notice via substituted means through three newspaper publications on March 12. This impeachment move is seen as the latest development in the rift between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki, stemming from Shaibu’s declaration of interest to join this year’s Edo governorship race.<\/p>\n
Shaibu approached the Federal High Court in Abuja with a motion ex parte seeking an interim injunction, which was declined by Justice James Omotosho. The judge adjourned further hearing to consider a motion seeking substituted service on the defendants due to Shaibu’s inability to serve them physically.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, during the Tuesday plenary at the Edo State House of Assembly, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku announced that the seven-day ultimatum given to Shaibu to respond to the impeachment notice had expired. The Majority Leader of the House, Charity Aiguobarueghan, moved a motion directing the Chief Judge to set up a seven-man committee to investigate the petition against Shaibu, which was supported by 19 members of the House.<\/p>\n
In response to these developments, the Coalition of Registered Political Parties, Edo State, urged the Assembly and Governor Obaseki to abandon the impeachment move against Shaibu.
