The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has delivered a stern warning to Nigerians, cautioning against the employment of underage housemaids. Hassan Tahir, the agency\u2019s Director of Legal and Prosecution, emphasized the legal ramifications of such practices during a media briefing held on Monday in Abuja.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the prevalence of challenges faced by employers of domestic workers, Tahir underscored the gravity of employing minors as housemaids, citing Section 23 of the Trafficking in Persons Act (TIP). According to him, this act explicitly condemns the employment of children as domestic workers, deeming it an offense punishable by law.<\/p>\n
Quoting Section 23 of the TIP Act, Tahir reiterated, \u201cany person who willfully employs, requests, recruits, transports, harbours, receives, or hires out a child as a domestic worker commits an offense and is liable to conviction of imprisonment for a minimum term of 6 months, and not exceeding 7 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
While acknowledging the need for household assistance, Tahir emphasized the importance of fair treatment for domestic workers. He urged employers to ensure that housemaids are provided with equitable living conditions, including sharing the same living space and educational opportunities as the employer’s children.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe domestic worker must attend the same school with your children, eat the same food with your children, wear the same cloth with your children, he or she must be treated equally with your children,” Tahir stated emphatically.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Tahir warned against any form of abuse or violation of the rights of domestic workers, emphasizing that NAPTIP would take decisive action against perpetrators.
