The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has voiced its concerns regarding the feasibility of the Federal Government’s loan repayment scheme for graduates. NANS argues that expecting beneficiaries to begin repayment just two years after completing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is unrealistic, citing the fact that less than 10 percent of graduates secure employment within this timeframe. In response, NANS proposes extending the repayment period to five years post-NYSC to better align with the challenges graduates face in finding employment.<\/p>\n
NANS President, Lucky Emonele, addressed these issues during a public hearing on the repeal and re-enactment of the Students Loans Access to Higher Education Bill 2024 in Abuja. Emonele commended President Bola Tinubu for including NANS leadership as representatives on the loan board, demonstrating responsiveness to student concerns. However, he emphasized the need for a more practical repayment timeline and suggested revisions to the proposed bill to address potential hindrances to its success.<\/p>\n
Emonele also called for the establishment of a Nigeria Education Loan Fund to provide study grants for students, further advocating against arbitrary increases in school fees by tertiary institutions. He urged the National Assembly to consider a resolution prohibiting such fee hikes for the next decade to ensure the sustainability of the loan scheme once enacted.
