The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called for the establishment of new regulations governing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure that its deployment benefits society while upholding fundamental rights and values.<\/p>\n
Aminu Maida, the executive vice chairman\/chief executive officer of NCC, emphasized the importance of carefully examining existing laws and developing ethical considerations to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of AI. He made these remarks during the 2024 World Consumer Rights Day held at the commission’s head office, represented by Abraham Oshadami, the executive commissioner, Technical Services Designate at NCC.<\/p>\n
Maida stressed that responsible AI usage is paramount in fostering consumer trust and avoiding potential issues. “Responsible AI means using it in an ethical way throughout its development, deployment, and usage. This includes considering issues like bias, privacy, transparency, and accountability,” he explained.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the significance of data privacy in AI applications, Maida underscored the complexity of formulating regulations and policies to govern AI. While acknowledging the efforts of legislative bodies to regulate this technology, he noted the ongoing challenge of striking a balance between risk mitigation and stifling innovation.<\/p>\n
“As AI technologies continue to advance, there is a need to foster innovation while safeguarding fundamental rights, values, and dignity of consumers,” Maida added.<\/p>\n
Nigeria has been proactive in its approach to AI, with Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, advocating for the development of a national strategy to harness AI for sustainable development. Additionally, the country recently joined 27 other nations in signing the Bletchley Declaration, which underscores the importance of understanding AI’s opportunities and risks and the necessity for collaborative efforts among governments.<\/p>\n
