The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has refuted claims suggesting a breach in its database following the recent undersea cable cut that disrupted services of banks and telecom operators in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued by Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, the commission assured Nigerians of the safety and protection of their data.<\/p>\n
The assurance came in response to reports circulating in some sections of the media regarding an alleged breach of citizens’ data by a private organization, XpressVerify.<\/p>\n
“We express gratitude to media partners and the whistleblowers for bringing this to our attention. And wish to assure Nigerians and legal residents that there is no data breach of any sort and the Citizens\u2019 data is safe and secure in Nigeria\u2019s National identity database,” the statement read.<\/p>\n
The Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, promptly ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter to ascertain if any of the Commission\u2019s Tokenisation verification agents had breached the licensing agreement directly or through any of their sub-licenses.<\/p>\n
“NIMC reaffirms its unwavering dedication to safeguarding, securing, and responsibly managing the data entrusted to us,” Coker-Odusote affirmed.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, repair works are underway on the undersea cable cuts that caused equipment faults on major undersea cables along the West African Coast. The incident led to internet service disruptions in the region, affecting mobile operators and internet service providers.<\/p>\n
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) confirmed that operators of the damaged cables have commenced repairs, with internet services gradually being restored. The affected cables include the West African Cable System (WACS) and African Coast to Europe (ACE), among others.<\/p>\n
Despite the challenges posed by the undersea cable cuts, both NIMC and NCC remain committed to ensuring the integrity of data and the uninterrupted provision of telecommunications services to Nigerians and residents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
