The recent coup d’\u00e9tat in Niger, as highlighted by the World Bank, is projected to intensify pressure on food markets not only in Niger but also across several West African countries. According to the World Bank’s September “Food Security Update,” this political turmoil has dire consequences, potentially leading to an additional seven million people in the region experiencing severe food insecurity. This comes at a time when 3.3 million people were already grappling with food insecurity during the lean season due to the surge in commodity and staple food prices.<\/p>\n

The situation in Niger is further complicated by the economic and financial sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union in August. These sanctions caused a staggering 21% increase in food prices in Niger, significantly impacting the ability of low-income households to meet their dietary needs and access food.<\/p>\n

The World Bank emphasized the critical role of the World Food Programme in providing food aid to Niger. However, access restrictions have hindered the efficient delivery of this vital assistance. Furthermore, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) anticipates that shortages of seeds and feed, coupled with soaring fertilizer costs, will impede the upcoming agricultural season, worsening food insecurity that is likely to persist beyond the lean season.<\/p>\n

The gravity of the situation is underscored by the World Bank’s findings, which indicate a drastic increase in the number of individuals requiring food and nutritional assistance in Western and Central Africa. The figures have surged from over 10.7 million in 2019 to almost 29 million in 2021 and have now exceeded 40 million in 2022 and 2023, emphasizing the region’s enduring food crisis.<\/p>\n

In specific terms, the World Bank revealed that 42.5 million people in Nigeria and other West African nations faced a food crisis or more severe conditions between June and August 2023.
