According to the most recent situation report, which covers weeks 31 to 34, this outbreak has afflicted 25 states and 124 Local Government Areas, with a case-fatality ratio of 2.9 percent.<\/p>\n
Cholera, an acute diarrhoeal illness caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria, is transmitted when people consume food or water contaminated with the bacteria. While some individuals may experience mild symptoms or remain asymptomatic, severe cases can be life-threatening.<\/p>\n
In Nigeria, cholera is a recurring seasonal disease, often surfacing during the rainy season, particularly in areas with inadequate sanitation facilities.<\/p>\n
The data from the cholera situation report highlights that the most affected age group has been children under the age of five, followed by individuals aged five to 14, across both male and female populations. Of all the suspected cases, 51 percent are male, and 49 percent are female.<\/p>\n
States reporting cholera cases in Nigeria include Zamfara, Cross River, Katsina, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Niger, Abia, Jigawa, Kano, Ondo, Borno, Kaduna, Bauchi, Sokoto, Plateau, and Gombe. Additionally, Oyo, Adamawa, Kebbi, Benue, Rivers, Ekiti, Imo, Osun, and Anambra have reported cases of the disease.<\/p>\n
