The move, outlined in the Financial Times, aims to gain insights into Binance’s dealings within Nigeria and address any outstanding tax liabilities. The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) is actively involved in seeking this information.

This development comes amid recent tensions between the Nigerian government and Binance, with accusations that the cryptocurrency platform has undermined efforts to stabilize the local currency, the naira. The conflict escalated after Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on information and strategy, called for the prohibition of Binance and other crypto platforms in Nigeria. Onanuga accused Binance of dictating exchange rates for Nigeria and encroaching on the Central Bank of Nigeria’s role.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso later claimed that $26 billion had passed through Binance from unidentified sources. To address concerns about potential market manipulation, Cardoso revealed collaborative efforts between the apex bank, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and security agencies. On March 8, Binance ceased all naira transactions on its platform, responding to reports that the government demanded $10 billion in retribution for allegedly profiting from illegal transactions in Nigeria.

Simultaneously, the ONSA has pressed for Binance to settle any unpaid tax obligations, marking another dimension to the ongoing scrutiny faced by the cryptocurrency trading firm.

The federal government has intensified its scrutiny of cryptocurrency trading firm Binance, requesting information on its top 100 users in Nigeria and a comprehensive transaction history spanning the last six months.
