In a concerted effort to enhance food safety standards and bolster trade capacities, the World Trade Organization (WTO) has inaugurated a $1.2 million standards trade development facility in Nigeria. This global initiative is geared towards empowering developing countries like Nigeria in adopting best practices to ensure the health of animals and plants, while fortifying food safety measures.<\/p>\n
During the official launch event held on Tuesday, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the WTO, emphasized Nigeria’s vast potential in the production and export of agricultural commodities such as cowpea and sesame. However, she also highlighted a significant challenge hindering the country’s trade prospects \u2013 the recurrent rejection of products due to transportation and storage issues, both domestically and for export purposes.<\/p>\n
Despite being acclaimed as the third-largest producer of sesame in Africa, Nigeria encountered hurdles in realizing its full export potential, with approximately 500 metric tonnes produced in 2022. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala stressed the pivotal role of the newly launched facility in addressing these challenges.
