The decision stemmed from a meeting held by their joint action committee in Akure, Ondo State, last Thursday and Friday. Mohammed Ibrahim, the SSANU National President, conveyed the necessity of the action, citing the government’s refusal to pay the withheld salaries accrued during their nationwide strike in 2022.

While the Federal Government recently released the withheld four months’ salary to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which was also on strike in 2022, it neglected SSANU and NASU. On February 13, 2024, SSANU and NASU unions addressed protest letters to the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, expressing dissatisfaction with the exclusion of non-teaching staff from the payment of outstanding salaries.

In their joint communique, the unions expressed their discontent, stating that while SSANU supports the payment to ASUU, it views the exclusion as a violation of the post-strike agreement with the government, which pledged non-victimization of their members involved in the strike. They opposed what they perceived as discriminatory practices, considering it an open invitation to an industrial crisis. The unions suspected saboteurs within the government and called on relevant authorities to implement the President’s directive promptly. Failure to do so would lead to a one-week warning strike, as approved by their National Executive Council (NEC) in conjunction with NASU.

Additionally, the unions demanded swift action on the renegotiation of the new national minimum wage, emphasizing the inadequacy of the current minimum wage due to the prevailing hyperinflation in the country.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) jointly declared a seven-day warning strike on Monday, protesting the withholding of their four months’ salaries by the Federal Government.
